Dr Mike O’Callaghan
Space Senior Principal Programme Manager. Dstl
Mike has worked for Dstl since 2007, after receiving his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Nottingham. He began his career at Dstl researching novel materials for military applications, then spent two years providing technical support to the Dstl Executive, covering a wide range of Defence science and technology (S&T) areas, including S&T policy and strategy development. Following this, he worked on research into Communications and Information Systems, seeking through S&T to address the broad range of MOD’s Information and Intelligence systems challenges. He then moved into Dstl’s Technical Directorate reporting directly to Dstl’s Chief Technical Officer, leading the CTO’s core team focussed on developing and implementing Dstl’s technical strategy, developing technical skills across Dstl, ensuring the technical quality of Dstl research, and supporting significant organisational change activities. Mike then spent two years leading a research programme seeking to understand how MOD could transform its C4ISR enterprise to address the challenges and opportunities of operating in the information age. Since 2017, Mike has led Dstl’s Space Programme through a period of significant growth and change. Following the UK Government’s recent Integrated Review, this will include leading the delivery of a number of concept demonstrators contributing towards the Government’s ambition to be a meaningful player in space by 2030.
